The Green Lantern movie was released on July 18, 2011, the day before my birthday. On that night I became one of many fans of the mythic-inspired comic book saga that made its cinematic debut at the time. One year later, on July 17, 2012, it would be my first ever comic-con experience and my first ever cosplay adventure. I did not know what to expect; all I had was a flight of fancy and teenaged naiveté to bring me along for the ride. I wore the costume at Fan Expo 2012 in Toronto, Canada. I arrived to the convention in the morning and waited anxiously for its start. Once I was there, I started seeing cosplayers running around with capes and costumes on. This made me excited to begin my first con experience dressed as a superhero from a comic book that inspired me into action.The flight of fantasy landed on July 17, 2012 at Fan Expo 2012 in Toronto, Canada. The Green Lantern staff at Fan Expo were some of the best dressed attendees of the entire event and they were a lot of fun to be around. They welcomed us to Fan Expo and were always available to give out flyers and have a chat. The first thing I did was take a photo with them as they worked behind the scenes. The day after Fan Expo 2012, I became a fan of the video game series, "Injustice: Gods Among Us." The character from Injustice is Superman from the movie, "Man of Steel" played by Henry Cavill. I was inspired to create a costume that incorporated elements from both the DC Comic book Superhero Metropolis and Superman's outfit from Superman Returns. The result was a purple and green costume that would serve as the base for my costume for Comic-con International 2013 in San Diego, California. The Green Lantern costume was hand painted by me, Ryan Welsh. The original Green Lantern movie costume was manufactured by Rubie's, the same company that makes many other licensed costumes. I began working on this costume in 2012 before it was officially released to the public. Once this movie was released I decided to work on the costume at an even faster pace to surprise my friends and family with a homemade gift for my birthday.The first step of making this outfit was choosing which fabric to use for the color scheme of the costume. This made sense because if I wanted to have a solid green outfit then I would have had to buy green fabric dye or coat each piece separately. I chose to use black fabric dye and a dry-cleaner's spray to turn the fabric green. Once the fabric was dyed, I began collecting other pieces for this costume. I decided to use a green body suit over a purple one because the original Green Lantern movie costume used a green body suit over a white one. The silver was cut from an actual Superman Returns costume worn by Kevin Costner as Clark Kent. The gold paint I used for this outfit was originally used as part of my Halloween costume from 2012.
